Good to know: whatever treatment you choose, it is always preceded by a personal consultation. Cosmetic doctor Juliet de Vries, has extensive experience in in performing surgical procedures. She is happy to invite you to a consultation to get acquainted and see what suits you.
Many of the surgical procedures at Huid & Laser Kliniek Delft are aimed at removing:
Atheroma cyst (sebaceous cyst)
An atheroma cyst is also known as a sebaceous cyst. It is a cavity filled with sebum, caused by the clogging of a hair follicle and its sebaceous gland. This creates a slowly growing swelling in the skin that is often skin-coloured and has a black dot in the centre. They often occur on the head (hair area), face, neck, chest, back and sometimes limbs. Because atheroma cysts are benign and often cause no symptoms, they do not need to be removed. However, they can be cosmetically disfiguring or become inflamed.
Lipoma
A lipoma is also known as a fat bump. It is an accumulation of fat cells that causes swelling just under the skin. Lipomas are most commonly seen on the forearms, neck, abdomen and back. The size varies; from smaller than 1 centimetre to as large as 10cm. Rest assured: lipomas are benign and often cause no symptoms. Therefore, they do not necessarily need to be removed. Still, you may feel insecure about their appearance, or they may cause an oppressive or painful feeling.
Birthmarks
A birthmark is a brown or black discolouration in the skin. Birthmarks occur because pigment cells accumulate. They can be present from birth or just appear over the years. Hereditary factors and exposure to sunlight (UV radiation) also play a role. There are three categories of birthmarks:
* Normal birthmarks: symmetrical shape, sharp edge, even colour, smaller than 6mm and does not change.
* Atypical birthmarks: asymmetrical shape, blurred border, multiple colours, 6mm or larger and changes.
* Malignant birthmarks (melanoma): can theoretically spread to the rest of the body. Should we suspect a mole to be malignant, you will be referred to your GP.
Piercing scar or hole
A piercing scar or hole occurs after wearing a piercing for a long time. The skin does not repair itself after removing the piercing. A dent or hole remains visible. Most piercing scars cause no complaints, however you may not like their appearance.
Surgical procedures step-by-step plan
A free consultation is always held prior to treatment were, together with the doctor, you will discuss your wishes and the treatment options. The treatment will then be plannend together. Here is a step-by-step breakdown of what you can expect:
During the consultation, your wishes and expectations are discussed;
The doctor examines the area, makes a diagnosis, and discusses the appropriate treatment plan;
On the day of treatment, the area is numbed locally with an anesthetic;
Step 4. The skin defect is removed by shaving or oval excision;
After treatment, you will discuss the outlook with the doctor and receive aftercare advice;
After 7 to 14 days, you come back for a check-up and stitches are removed;
A small scar will remain, which will become less and less noticeable over time.

Frequently asked questions
Showering
To allow the wound to heal as nicely as possible, it is important to keep the wound dry for the first 12 to 24 hours. After that, the wound can be exposed to water, but care should be taken to avoid the scabbing getting soft. Long, hot showers are not recommended, and the wound should be carefully patted dry after showering. It is also wise to avoid bathing or swimming for 3 weeks.
Sun
It is important to avoid UV radiation. A fresh scar may absorb extra pigment under the influence of sunlight which may give the scar a dark colour. To avoid this, it is advised to cover the wound or use an SPF 30 or 50 on the area when going into the sun.
Scar cream
To promote skin recovery, it is advisable to use a scar cream. This will make any swelling go down faster and normalise the colour. It also keeps your skin nice and supple. At Huid & Laser Kliniek Delft, we work with Alhydran: a clinically proven cream that is well absorbed by the skin.
Sports
We advise against sports or heavy physical exercise for the first 2 weeks after the procedure.
A treatment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. It depends on the size of the skin defect and spot on the body or face. Of course, the cosmetic doctor can explain more about this during a free consultation.
Because local anaesthesia is used, the treatment itself will not be painful. The stings from the anaesthetic may be perceived as unpleasant.
Shaving creates a small abrasion on which a scab naturally grows and falls off later. There is no scar. In oval excision, an oval-shaped strip of skin around the skin defect is removed, after which it is healed, leaving a small scar.
